BACKGROUND: Teaching through role-plays is a preferred modality when certain behaviours or skills need to be taught. They provide a risk-free environment that simulates a real-life scenario. For a clinician, appearance in a Court of Law as an expert witness is a part of his/her legal obligation. OBJECTIVE: To explore the utility of Mock Court as an additional teaching tool for undergraduate medical students, in understanding and familiarizing with legal procedures, specifically the courtroom procedures. METHODOLOGY: We conducted Mock Court sessions with the students playing various roles, following which feedback was collected from the students, teachers and guest assessors. The data was statistically analysed by comparison of frequencies and paired t-test (pre- and post-session comparison). RESULTS: The study revealed a positive effect of the Mock Court sessions on the students, based on their increased confidence, motivation and a better grasp of legal procedures. There was a statistically significant (p < 0.001) improvement in the understanding of specific aspects of courtroom procedures after the session. CONCLUSION: The authors recommend the active implementation of Mock Court as a teaching aid for undergraduate medical students, and the use of PDSA (Deming) cycle as a tool for quality-checks and self-improvement in subsequent sessions.

BACKGROUND: It is a crucial task for physicians to deliver life threatening information to patients (breaking bad news; BBN). Many aspects influence these conversations on both sides, patients, and doctors. BBN affects the patient-physician relationship, patients' outcome, and physicians' health. Many physicians are still untrained for this multi-facetted task and feel unprepared and overburdened when facing situations of BBN. Therefore, any faculties should aim to integrate communication skills into their medical curricula as early as possible. The SPIKES protocol is an effective framework to deliver BBN. Aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and obstacles of a BBN seminar and its acceptance and learning curve among undergraduate medical students. METHODS: 158 2nd year undergraduate medical students attended a compulsory BBN seminar. The task was to deliver a cancer diagnosis to the patient within a patient - physician role-play in a gyneco-oncological setting before and after a presentation of the SPIKES protocol by the lecturer. The students evaluated important communication skills during these role-plays respectively. Self-assessment questionnaires were obtained at the beginning and end of the seminar. RESULTS: Most students indicated that their confidence in BBN improved after the seminar (p < 0.001). They like the topic BBN to be part of lectures (76%) and electives (90%). Communication skills improved. Lecturer and seminar were positively evaluated (4.57/5). CONCLUSION: The seminar significantly increased confidence and self-awareness in delivering life-threatening news to patients among undergraduate medical students. Important learning aspects of BBN and communication skills could be delivered successfully to the participants within a short time at low costs. The integration of communication skills should be implemented longitudinally into medical curricula starting before clinical education to increase the awareness of the importance of communication skills, to decrease anxiety, stress, and workload for future doctors and- most importantly- to the benefit of our patients.

RESUMO

Despite increasing acknowledgment of racism in both the curricular and clinical spaces, it continues to pervade the medical field, with clear detrimental impacts to the health of our patients. The introduction of anti-racism bystander training (ARBT) may provide a unique opportunity to reduce inequitable care and health disparities that occur secondary to racism in healthcare. ARBT, in its various forms, has been shown to be an effective method to increase participants' confidence and efficacy in intervening on observed racist encounters. This training can take numerous forms, and the authors provide one successful template used with medical students at their own institution. If medical centers, educators, and leaders in the field of medicine truly hope to mitigate the individual racist behaviors that remain in healthcare, ARBT must be employed to a much wider degree in medical education.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of two simulation-based teaching programs of psychiatric interviewing using two role-play modalities on first-year psychiatry residents' confidence in their psychiatric clinical skills. METHODS: The teaching program consisted of seven 2-hour sessions per month led by two psychiatrists and academic teachers. In the peer-to-peer role-play group, students played either the patient's or doctor's role, and case scenarios were proposed by the students; in the teacher role-play group, a teacher played the patient' role and case scenarios were written by teachers. Simulation debriefing was teacher-guided in both groups. Confidence was measured with the Confidence in Psychiatric Clinical Skills Questionnaire (CPCQ) before and after the teaching program. RESULTS: Both strategies induced a significant improvement in the CPCQ total score. However, the peer-to-peer role-play program induced a significantly larger improvement in the CPCQ total score. DISCUSSION: Compared to teacher role-play, peer-to-peer role-play may enable a better comprehension of the patient perspective, reduce performance anxiety during the simulated scenario, and provide a partly improvised scenario that is more transferable to real-life clinical experiences. CONCLUSION: Teaching psychiatric interviewing using the peer-to-peer role-play approach enables greater improvement in confidence in clinical skills than teacher role-play.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: School-based sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education is often reported as being inadequate and/or inconsistent. This study aimed to investigate the educational interventions for promoting SRH in school counselors and compare the results in three groups: lecturing, buzz group and role-play. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An intervention quasi-experimental design was employed to evaluate the usefulness of educating SRH topics by using interactive teaching methods for 120 school counselors. Changes in the participants' knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy toward SRH education were evaluated by each group using a pretest and a posttest. RESULTS: The results of this study revealed that 75% of counselors deemed SRH training vital and felt that the best SRH educators are health care providers and the reason might be their lack of educational skills. They also stated that the most significant barriers to education in schools include concerns about parental feedback and lack of appropriate abilities. CONCLUSION: The present study showed that the use of all three methods (lecturing, buzz groups and role-play) in SRH training improves the level of knowledge, attitude and self-efficacy; although role-play could have been more effective than lecturing in improving counselors' knowledge.

AIM: To describe the application of selected creative and participatory research methods in nursing science. DESIGN: Research methodology paper. METHODS: Researcher-initiated role play, stimulated recall interviews, the Storycrafting method, painting and drawing. Altogether, 11 children (5-7 years old) and 12 parents participated in the research. RESULTS: Each small group (n = 3) acted differently during the data collection. Not every child wanted to play, draw or tell stories, but they all expressed their views through some method. Although the same themes emerged from children's narratives, they could not have been verified by just one method. CONCLUSIONS: Using creative and participatory methods and the principles of studies of child perspectives are applicable ways of conducting research in nursing science. Children must be treated as individuals during the research process, and they must have opportunities to use several communication methods to express their views. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND PATIENT CARE: Understanding different ways to interact with children and hear children's views will help nurses to encounter children. IMPACT: In this article, we present a valid way of conducting research with children. By following our protocol, nursing research from a child perspective can be implemented. REPORTING METHOD: Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ). PATIENT CONTRIBUTION: The child participants were involved in choosing physical places for data collection and the usage and order of the selected methods. Both the children and the adult participants took part in interpreting the research data.

Introduction: Medical students may witness lapses in professionalism but lack tools to effectively address such episodes. Current professionalism curricula lack opportunities to practice communication skills in addressing professionalism lapses. Methods: We designed a simulation curriculum to introduce professionalism expectations, provide communication tools using elements of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality TeamSTEPPS program, and address observed professionalism lapses involving patient safety in hierarchical patient care teams. Students were surveyed on knowledge, skills, and attitude regarding professionalism before, immediately after, and 6 months after participation. Results: Of 253 students, 70 (28%) completed baseline and immediate postsurveys, and 39 (15%) completed all surveys. In immediate postsurveys, knowledge of communication tools (82% to 94%, p = .003) and empowerment to address residents (19% to 44%, p = .001) and attendings (15% to 39%, p < .001) increased. At 6 months, 96% of students reported witnessing a professionalism lapse. Discussion: The curriculum was successful in reported gains in knowledge of communication tools and empowerment to address professionalism lapses, but few students reported using the techniques to address witnessed lapses in real life.

In the current focus-group study, we consider student experiences with and perceptions of teaching methods that involve practice observation, demonstration, and performance assessment and feedback (i.e., skill-based teaching methods). Focus groups included masters of social work students (N = 40) from six universities in the United States. Students were, on average, 34 years of age (range 21 to 58) with 75% female, 20% male, and two non-binary students. Students identified as White (50%), Latinx/Latine (20%), Black (12.5%), and multi-racial (12.2%). A framework-guided content analysis was used, and revealed four broad themes: 1) classroom-based opportunities for practice observation and feedback, 2) field-based opportunities for practice observation and feedback, 3) other methods such as standardized patient simulations and computer simulations, and 4) attitudes about these methods. Experiences with these methods were quite diverse with classroom-based role plays being the most common. Attitudes were generally positive, though lack of authenticity and performance anxiety were perceived as drawbacks. Student reflections on their experiences yielded several teaching recommendations specific to preparation, the nature of the simulated client role, and feedback.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies suggest the relevance of healthcare simulation to prepare future doctors to deliver bad news. A such, we designed a role-play workshop to train first-year residents enrolled in Lille University School of Medicine to break bad news. The objective of this work is to report on our experience of this training and to assess its educational value through its capacity to satisfy residents' expectations, to induce a feeling of ease towards bad news disclosure, and to change trainees' preconceptions regarding these situations. METHODS: The training consisted of a 45-minute heuristic reflective activity, aimed at identifying residents' preconceptions regarding bad news disclosure, followed by 4 30-min role-plays in which they played the parts of the physician, the patient and/or their relatives. Trainees were asked to answer 2 questionnaires (pre- and post-training), exploring previous experiences, preconceived ideas regarding bad news disclosure and workshop satisfaction. RESULTS: Almost all residents felt very satisfied with the workshop, which they regarded as formative (91%) and not too stressful (89%). The majority felt "more capable" (53% vs. 83%) and "more comfortable" (27% vs. 62%) to deliver bad news, especially regarding "finding the right words" (12% vs. 22%). Trainees tended to overestimate their skills before the workshop and lowered their assessment of their performance after attending the training, especially when they played the role of a patient in the simulation. CONCLUSION: Healthcare role-play seems an interesting technique for training to breaking bad news. Placing residents in the role of patients or relatives is an active approach that encourages reflexivity.

BACKGROUND: Practical hands-on training is necessary for clinical competence in managing medical emergencies in the dental setting. Therefore, the King Abdulaziz University Faculty of Dentistry developed a role-play simulation-based clinical module for training clinical years (Years 4, 5, and 6) dental students in medical emergency management between 2016 and 2020. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and skills of years 4, 5, and 6 dental students before and after the completion of the role-play simulation-based medical emergency training module. METHODS: A mandatory four-hour annual training module was designed consisting of a 45-minute lecture on the medical emergency basic action plan and overview, four hands-on stations, and six role-play simulation-based medical emergency stations. A 16-item multiple choice test was used to assess the knowledge of the students before and after the training module every academic year. An objective structured clinical exam (OSCE) on a medical emergency scenario was administered to the students graduating each year. The difference between the pre- and post-module test scores and the one-time OSCE pass/fail rate were analyzed statistically using appropriate tests. RESULTS: A total of 846 students participated in the study between 2017 and 2020: 275 once, 483 twice, 87 thrice, and one participated four times; in total, 1,506 assessments were conducted. Overall, the pre-test and post-test mean scores were 9.4 ± 3.0 and 13.5 ± 1.6, respectively. All students showed significant improvements in the post-test scores compared to the pre-test scores. Year 4 students showed the highest improvement, followed by Year 5 and Year 6. There was a statistically significant association between the pass/fail rate of the OSCE station and the number of times the module was taken. CONCLUSIONS: The significant improvement in the scores of clinical year students in this study supports an annual mandate for all dental students to undergo simulation-based competency training in their clinical years. Teaching institutions are recommended to utilize simulation and hands-on instruction to teach medical emergency management.

Background: Accurate and reliable assessment of clinician integrity in the delivery of empirically supported treatments is critical to effective research and training interventions. Assessment of clinician integrity can be performed through recording simulated (SI) or real-life (RL) consultations, yet research examining the equivalence of these data is in its infancy. To explore the strength of integrity assessment between SI and RL samples in Motivational Interviewing (MI) consultations, this article examines whether Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) assessments differ between SI and RL consultations and reviews the predictive validity of SI and RL MI skills categorisations for RL client response language. Methods: This study first compared MITI coding obtained in SI and RL consultations for 36 veterinary clinicians. Multilevel models of 10 MITI behaviour counts and four MITI global scores were run using MLwiN 3.02 to assess if a significant difference existed between SI and RL MITI data, with consultation within clinician within cohort (A and B) as nested random effects. Second, we investigated the effect of SI and RL MI skills groupings on rate of RL client response talk using three multivariable regression models. Two Poisson regression models, with random intercepts for farm and veterinarian and offset for number of minutes of the recordings, were estimated in the statistical software R using the package glmmTMB for the two response variables Change Talk and Sustain Talk. A logistic regression model, with the same random intercepts, with the response variable Proportion Change Talk was also estimated using the same package. Results: Veterinary clinicians were less MI consistent in RL consultations, evidenced through significantly lower global MITI Cultivating Change Talk (p < 0.001), Partnership (p < 0.001) and Empathy (p = 0.003) measures. Despite lower objective MI skills groupings in RL consultations, ranking order of veterinary clinicians by MI skills was similar between contexts. The predictive validity of SI and RL MI skills groupings for RL client Change Talk was therefore similar, with significantly more RL client Change Talk associated with veterinarians categorised in the highest grouping ('moderate') in both SI (p = 0.01) and RL (p = 0.02) compared to untrained veterinarians in each respective context. Conclusions: Findings suggest SI and RL data may not be interchangeable. Whilst both data offer useful insights for specific research and training purposes, differing contextual MI skills thresholds may offer a more equitable assessment of clinician RL client-facing MI integrity. Further research is needed to explore the applicability of these findings across health contexts.

Video game play is remarkably ubiquitous in today's society given its recent emergence only in the late 1950s. While this fast evolution could exemplify the power of play, video games exploit but also extend other types of play. Here, we review a classification of the ecosystem of video games useful in the emerging field of the cognitive neuroscience of video games. We then discuss how video games may leverage different play types, considering first locomotor-rotational, object, and social play before highlighting the importance of role, rule, and pretend play in video games. With an eye toward comparative studies of the neural bases of play across species, we discuss whether video games may fulfil the five criteria from Burghardt (2005) to identify play. Finally, in line with play's possible preparatory role for adulthood, we review the positive impact on cognition and future learning of action-like video games. Highlighting that not all video games have this impact, we note more granular hypotheses about the biological functions of play are to be encouraged.

Background: Didactic lecture is most commonly used method to teach medical students in Family and Community Medicine. However, considering its demerits and the need to integrate theoretical knowledge into practice, the objective of this paper is to review the contribution of role play in medical education and to propose it's applications to deliver healthcare services in community more effectively. Methods: Research studies on role play were searched in PubMed, Google scholar, Google using terms role play, medical education, community medicine, family medicine, health promotion, awareness during the period between January 2000 up to December 2021 to evaluate the potential and contribution of role play in medical education and health promotion. Results: Review of role play and related researches were included to analyze the outcome. The outcomes of different studies analyzed were showing several teaching methodologies used in medical field. Several studies have tested role play in other medical specialities and have found it to be a powerful educational tool. However, not many studies have tested its effectiveness to educate students in Family and Community Medicine although it could have immense practical applications like demonstrating and creating awareness in the community about the importance of cancer screening, breast feeding, immunisation, food fortification, genetic screening, premarital counselling, ante natal checkups, danger signs in pregnancy. Conclusion: Role play simulates real scenarios enabling students to apply their skills and knowledge into practice in real time. It can integrate theory concepts into practice. Hence, it must be introduced in medical curriculum to achieve the objectives of teaching and learning more effectively.

Objectives: Role-playing has motivated foreign language learners for decades. In doctor-patient medical consultation role-plays, the doctor role has always been considered an important learning opportunity, whilst the patient role remained obscured. Our study, therefore, had a dual focus. We first explored how intrinsic motivation changes medical second-language (L2) learning through the lens of self-determination theory. We subsequently examined if playing the role of the patient provides additional value to medical L2 learning. Methods: We performed a mixed-methods study using a one-group pretest-posttest design. Participants were 15 student volunteers learning medical Dutch through peer role-play in medical consultations. Students completed a questionnaire before and after the course that measured changes in their intrinsic motivation to experience stimulation (IMES), feeling of relatedness, and feeling of competence. We also measured students' competence through a peer-rated checklist and the final course grades. At the end of the course, the students participated in semi-structured interviews to discuss their experience acting as patients. The data were subjected to the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and a thematic analysis. Results: The pre- and post-questionnaires revealed that students' IMES as well as their feeling of relatedness increased. Their self-perceptions, feeling of competence, peer assessments, and final course grades demonstrated that students were competent in medical L2. Our thematic analysis led to the identification of five themes of the role-play exercise for medical L2 learning: (1) motivational experience, (2) supportive peer interaction, (3) setting up a role-play environment for medical L2 learning, (4) utilizing the patient role to benefit medical L2 learning, and (5) a novel patient perspective on the doctor's role. Discussion: Our study found that role-play, by enhancing students' intrinsic motivation, feeling of relatedness, and competence development, aids the medical L2 learning process. Interestingly, playing a patient role in medical consultation was also found to support this process. We welcome future controlled experiments to confirm the positive impact of playing the role of the patient in medical consultation.

Rises in vaccine hesitancy and the incidence of vaccine-preventable illnesses is, in part, due to an increase in vaccine misinformation. Consequently, many patients express skepticism and mistrust of vaccines. It is important that future clinicians are well equipped to understand vaccine-related literature to prepare them for difficult conversations with patients. This module incorporated various active learning approaches to evaluate vaccine-related literature, discuss true contraindications for vaccination, and aid students in approaching patient-clinician conversations about vaccines. Data gained from delivery of this module suggests that students benefit from gaining knowledge and cultivating communication skills about vaccines early in health professions education.

OBJECTIVE: This study's primary aim is to assess the use of different types of standardized patients (SPs) during formative simulation activities on summative objective structured clinical exams (OSCE) in a PharmD curriculum. METHODS: Randomized-controlled study with first-year pharmacy students in a Pharmacist Patient Care Lab (PCL) course. Students were randomized into groups with either hired actors or their peers as SPs for virtual simulation activities. All students then completed a virtual teaching OSCE (TOSCE) and virtual OSCE. A mixed effects analysis was done to compare TOSCE and OSCE scores between the two groups. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups in their TOSCE or OSCE scores for the analytical and global rubrics. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that peers may be as effective as having hired actors as SPs in preparing students for virtual skills exams.

BACKGROUND: Social skills training by human trainers is a well-established method of teaching appropriate social and communication skills and strengthening social self-efficacy. Specifically, human social skills training is a fundamental approach to teaching and learning the rules of social interaction. However, it is cost-ineffective and offers low accessibility, since the number of professional trainers is limited. A conversational agent is a system that can communicate with a human being in a natural language. We proposed to overcome the limitations of current social skills training with conversational agents. Our system is capable of speech recognition, response selection, and speech synthesis and can also generate nonverbal behaviors. We developed a system that incorporated automated social skills training that completely adheres to the training model of Bellack et al through a conversational agent. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to validate the training effect of a conversational agent-based social skills training system in members of the general population during a 4-week training session. We compare 2 groups (with and without training) and hypothesize that the trained group's social skills will improve. Furthermore, this study sought to clarify the effect size for future larger-scale evaluations, including a much larger group of different social pathological phenomena. METHODS: For the experiment, 26 healthy Japanese participants were separated into 2 groups, where we hypothesized that group 1 (system trained) will make greater improvement than group 2 (nontrained). System training was done as a 4-week intervention where the participants visit the examination room every week. Each training session included social skills training with a conversational agent for 3 basic skills. We evaluated the training effect using questionnaires in pre- and posttraining evaluations. In addition to the questionnaires, we conducted a performance test that required the social cognition and expression of participants in new role-play scenarios. Blind ratings by third-party trainers were made by watching recorded role-play videos. A nonparametric Wilcoxson Rank Sum test was performed for each variable. Improvement between pre- and posttraining evaluations was used to compare the 2 groups. Moreover, we compared the statistical significance from the questionnaires and ratings between the 2 groups. RESULTS: Of the 26 recruited participants, 18 completed this experiment: 9 in group 1 and 9 in group 2. Those in group 1 achieved significant improvement in generalized self-efficacy (P=.02; effect size r=0.53). We also found a significant decrease in state anxiety presence (P=.04; r=0.49), measured by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). For ratings by third-party trainers, speech clarity was significantly strengthened in group 1 (P=.03; r=0.30). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings reveal the usefulness of the automated social skills training after a 4-week training period. This study confirms a large effect size between groups on generalized self-efficacy, state anxiety presence, and speech clarity.

In the modern era of dentistry, role modeling/roleplaying is one of the most prevalent and recommended methods of dental education. Working on video production projects and using student-centred learning also help students create feelings of ownership and self-esteem. This study aimed to compare students' perceptions of roleplay videos among genders, different disciplines of dentistry, and different levels of dental students. This study included 180 third- and fourth-year dental students registered in courses such as 'Introduction to Dental Practice' and 'Surgical management of oral and maxillofacial diseases', respectively, at the College of Dentistry at Jouf University. Four groups of recruited participants were pre-tested using a questionnaire about their clinical and communication skills. The students were tested again using the same questionnaire at the end of the workshop to evaluate improvements in their skills. The students were then assigned to create roleplay videos with respect to demonstrated skills related to all three disciplines (Periodontics, Oral Surgery, and Oral Radiology) in a week's time. Students' perceptions of the roleplay video assignments were collected through a questionnaire survey. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare responses for each section of the questionnaire (p < 0.05). Improvements in problem-solving and project management skills during video production were reported by 90% of the participants. No significant difference (p > 0.05) in the mean scores of the responses was found with respect to the type of discipline involved in the process. There was a significant difference in the mean scores of the responses between male and female students (p < 0.05). The fourth year participants demonstrated increased mean scores and significantly higher (p < 0.05) mean scores than third-year participants. Students' perceptions of roleplay videos differed by gender and the level of the students, but not by the type of discipline.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically affected every aspect of life worldwide. Contact restrictions and social distancing during the epidemic has led to the suspension of bedside teaching (BST) and shifting to online didactic teaching and other methods of active learning. We implemented peer role-play simulation (PRPS) during the pandemic to compensate for the suspended BST. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of PRPS in developing the students' verbal communication, empathy and clinical reasoning skills compared to BST. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study conducted in Jazan University faculty of medicine with the study sample including all medical students enrolled in 5th and 6th year during the academic year 2020-21. Data collection involved using a web-based validated questionnaire. Results: Most of the students (84.1%) rated bedside teaching (BST) as extremely beneficial or beneficial in developing verbal communication skills compared to 73.3% for peer role-play simulation (PRPS). A similar pattern was found in empathy skills development with 84.1% for bedside compared to 72.2% for PRPS. The pattern is reversed with the development of clinical reasoning skills with 77.7% rating BST as beneficial or extremely beneficial compared to 81.2% for PRPS. Conclusion: Overall, peer role-play is generally a valuable and trustworthy method in the absence of bedside teaching for enhancing clinical reasoning skills of medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic from students' perspective. It is less efficient than bedside teaching in enhancing communication skills. It cannot wholly replace bedside teaching, although it can be used reliably for that purpose in exceptional circumstances when bedside teaching cannot be implemented.

AIM: The study examined the differences in nursing student empathy, caring behavior and competence between the experimental and control groups before and after educational intervention and to predict the factors affecting their core competencies. BACKGROUND: Educating nursing students in empathy and caring behaviors before entering clinical practice is challenging. DESIGN: We used a two-group pretest and post-test quasi-experimental design. METHODS: First-year nursing students from medical schools in Taiwan participated in our study. Data were collected between March and May 2022. The learning method used with the intervention group was role-playing with videos and guided reflection. The control group was exposed to traditional curriculum. Empathy, caring behavior and competence were measured using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy- Healthcare Providers, the Caring Behaviors Scale and the Nursing Student Competence Scale. RESULT: A total of 72 participants (40 in the experimental group and 32 in the control group) were included in the final statistical analysis. The response rate was 92%. Statistically significant differences in nursing student empathy, caring behavior and competence were observed between the experimental and control groups (p < .05). The η2 effect levels were 0.083, 0.223 and 0.270. Higher caring behavior scores were significantly associated with higher nursing student competence scores (ß = 0.81, 95% CI:0.66-0.97). CONCLUSIONS: Education based on video role-play and guided reflection improved empathy, caring behavior and nursing competence in first-year nursing students.
